Ditching Fairtrade: not my cup of tea

October 19, 2017

Day of Action: 28th October 2017

You may be aware that Sainsbury’s own-brand Extra Strong, Green Tea, Red Label and Gold Label ranges of tea are no longer Fairtrade certified. Over a 100,000 people have signed the petition asking Sainsbury’s not to ditch Fairtrade. Many have taken actions to tell Sainsbury’s that ‘fairly traded’ is not their cup of tea, and the ‘don’t ditch Fairtrade’ coalition are coordinating these efforts with a day of action organised for the 28th October.

Tea can be powerful. Every Fairtrade cuppa makes a difference to the lives of tea farmers and workers in some of the world’s poorest communities. Sainsbury’s are weakening this power by ditching the Fairtrade Mark from some of their own-brand tea and replacing it with a ‘Fairly Traded’ label. They’ve decided to abandon Fairtrade and pilot their own scheme. Tea farmers will no longer be able to decide for themselves how to spend the money that they have earned through the Fairtrade Premium. It’s also very likely to mislead customers who may think ‘Fairly Traded’ is the same as independent Fairtrade certification. It’s not.

Join communities across the UK for a day of action, 28 October.
